Cop Charged With Child Abuse

(APOPKA) -- An Orlando police officer has been charged with aggravated child abuse against his seven-year-old son.

Authorities say they found welts and bruises on the boy's chest and arms. Officer Dennis Turner was arrested when he arrived at the Apopka police station to pick up the child. Police claim the abuse occurred at the family's home in Apopka Wednesday after the child brought home a bad report from school.

Aggravated child abuse is a second-degree felony that carries a 15-year maximum sentence. Turner has been suspended from the force until the investigation is complete.

The officer was surprised at being arrested. He says children need to be disciplined.
