In search of the fine line
By Jordan Riak, Ottawa Citizen, June 28, 2008

The search for the fine line that separates spanking from abuse raises other concerns of equal importance. First, we must ask ourselves, is it government's role to interfere with normal, traditional practices -- things that good up-standing citizens have been doing since the beginning of recorded history, things that cause no harm and may even serve a useful purpose? Reasonable and moderate shoplifting, for instance. I'm not talking about stealing, mind you, just normal shoplifting. Doesn't everybody nibble a few almonds from the bulk food bin while doing their grocery shopping? Taking items valued 99 cents or less never did anyone any harm. But obviously a line has to be drawn. Taking something valued $1 or more, well, that's different. That's stealing.
